Caitlin Murphy- K-Pax

K-Pax

Being one of the best films we watched in this class, K-Pax was a phenomenal last movie of the semester. While science fiction themes tend to bore me, psychological films and mental illness fascinates me. K-Pax is about a man who claims to be from another planet outside of our solar system called "K-Pax". The alien looks just like a human, and can talk and form all human tasks. He is sent to a mental hospital where Dr. Powell begins to hold therapy sessions to understand why the man believes so intensely that he is from another planet. Throughtout the film, the ward staff and patients begin to believe him more and more. Dr. Powell becomes fond of Prot (the alien) and gives him special treatment like inviting him to his home for July 4th, something un heard of.

The end of the film shows Prot being brain dead and known as a human who has faced extreme trauma, named Porter. This ending makes us begin to piece together whether or not he was really an alien, or just mentally ill caused by his past trauma. This is never fully explained to us, and it is the viewer's responsibility to develop their own theory.

I believe that Prot was just extremely damaged from trauma, and was not an alien based off of the way the ending played out. What is you opinion of Prot?
