Religious symbolism in Films

SOOO what I find most interesting in these films is how dense the films are in religious symbolism. Do all the directors and writers of the films we have watched purposefully include the religious symbolism and messages that critics point out? As the audience, are we inserting the symbolism because we want it to be there or was it intended to be present?
